Argentina–U.S. 2026: A key step in intellectual property

The Reciprocal Trade and Investment Agreement signed on February 5, 2026 introduces important commitments for Argentina’s intellectual property framework. In particular, Article 1.9.2 of Annex III, Section 1 requires Argentina to fully implement major international IP treaties —including Berne, Paris, WIPO, and Marrakech—and to submit the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) to the Argentine Congress for approval.

This is a significant development. Effective alignment with these standards—and potential accession to the PCT—would integrate Argentina more closely into the global patent system, enhance legal certainty, and facilitate the internationalization of inventions. For companies, researchers, and innovators, this means more predictable procedures, lower costs, and greater competitiveness.

Ultimately, these commitments are not just international obligations; they represent a practical opportunity to position Argentina as a serious and reliable jurisdiction in intellectual property.
